Kolleen Horton
Seattle, WA
Player information:
- I am 6'4'' with an athletic build.
- I have a good shot from the block out to the 3-point line (won a 3-point contest with Washington State Women’s basketball team).
- In the post, I can go to my left or right. I can get open and am able to read my defender. I have many post moves going left and right (I am typically right handed but some people have asked me if I am left handed after watching me play). I also have a very nice hook (also either left or right)
- I am good at reading players while I am on defense. I consider myself as a smart defender. If I am guarding a strong post who doesn't have much of a left hand I am going to stop her from going right and force her to attempt moves with her left. If the person I am guarding is not a very big threat but an outside player is a threat on the drive, I may slightly sag off my player and be ready to help when the outside player drives.
Basketball History:
- I played at Washington State University my sophmore year (2003-2004). It was a really bad experience (to say the least). There were really unusual circumstances (I would share them if needed but I prefer to keep them private out of respect for the school and coaches) that led me to decide to not play the following year. After I stopped playing for the team, I continued to play everyday for a few hours at the recreation center with guys. I believe playing with guys has really improved my game. Once leaving Pullman, WA, (March 2007) I moved back home to Edmonds, WA to do my student teaching, which I am just now finishing up. I have continued to work out daily and play at a local gym with guys. I have also played in a couple of different Seattle women's leagues which has allowed me to play with and against numerous ex-college/ex-pro players. I honestly feel I outplay a vast number of these players.
- When in high school, I signed to University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. The coach (Sherri Murrell) ended up transferring to WSU one month before I was to graduate from high school. I wanted to follow her to WSU but all of the scholarships were already taken for my freshman year. She recommended I go to Umpqua Community College my freshman year and then she would sign me at WSU my sophmore year. I took her up on the offer.
- Down at Umpqua I played for coach Dave Stricklin...averaged 11.7 points and 8.0 rebounds a game...shot 47.9 percent from the field...highest scoring game was 26 points versus Portland Community College...grabbed a season-high 21 rebounds versus Lane Community College...tallied seven double-doubles on the year...earned all-tournament honors at the NWAACC Crossover Tournament.
- In high school I played for Coach Terry Wilkinson at Blanchet...member of team that finished second at state as a SOPHOMORE...averaged 8.6 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.6 blocks and 1.2 assists a game as a JUNIOR...team finished second at state...earned state tournament sportsmanship award...team leader in rebounds, field goal percentage (51 percent) and blocks (40)...tallied 17 points, nine rebounds and three blocks in a state tournament game against Aberdeen...led Blanchet in rebounds, blocks and was the second highest scorer on team as a SENIOR...averaged 9.0 points, 9.5 rebounds and a block a game...shot 42 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point territory.
